Achieving balance isn’t a daily feat, but it’s absolutely possible over time. I talk a lot about balance because I’ve seen how life-changing it can be once you build a routine that harmonizes family, work, and personal needs. Finding this balance often comes from flexibility and understanding that your agenda may need adjustments for unexpected daily events. But planning ahead helps create structure and discipline, making it easier to stay on course.
Remember: BALANCE DOESN’T MEAN PERFECTION. It means MAKING TIME FOR WHAT TRULY MATTERS.
One thing that may sound like a cliché is just how crucial it is to know your “why.” Let me share a bit about my experience. Over the past few years, I was busy with projects I enjoyed, but something felt off—I wasn’t aligned with my true purpose. I realized my “why” was rooted in providing time, financial security, and meaningful presence for my family.
This year, a few events shook me deeply, prompting me to let go of things that weren’t aligned with my purpose and focus only on what truly mattered. As a result, I’ve achieved a much greater sense of balance. Balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about focusing on what matters, being flexible, and staying open to growth and transformation.
Practical Techniques for Better Balance
1. TIME BLOCKING
In your calendar, use color-coding to organize tasks. For example, use:
- Red for personal time (non-negotiables like self-care),
- Blue for work, and
- Green for family.
Block out time for each activity, including family breakfast, gym, and meditation. At the end of each day, take a moment to be grateful for what you accomplished and plan the next day. This clarity helps you stick to your plan and adapt to any unexpected challenges.
2. BATCH TASKS
There are two approaches to task batching:
- Option 1: Group small, tedious tasks into a 30-60 minute block. Getting these done first thing in the morning gives a sense of achievement and builds a growth mindset.
- Option 2: Tackle the most challenging, important tasks early, before checking notifications. For these, plan ahead and limit each task to a maximum of 90 minutes to avoid overwhelm.
Group similar or related tasks together to stay focused and efficient.
3. SET DAILY NON-NEGOTIABLES
Identify tasks, actions, or passions that are non-negotiable for you. Schedule these first on your calendar, then build the rest of your routine around them. Honoring these non-negotiables reduces stress and lets you focus on what brings you joy, making life more fulfilling.
4. LEARN TO PIVOT
Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but they offer valuable growth. Embrace the concept of “planning with flexibility.” Adjust your agenda as needed; over time, you’ll become skilled at pivoting. Ask yourself, “Is this within my control?” If yes, solve the problem and make the necessary adjustments. If no, let it go and move forward. Adaptability is key to balance.
Mindset Shift
At first, these tips may be challenging, and there will be both good and bad days. That’s normal, even as you grow more balanced. Be compassionate with yourself and let go of guilt around missed goals. Focus instead on what you’ve learned and how you’re growing.
Celebrate small wins. Don’t dismiss them as insignificant—small victories build momentum for bigger achievements. Embrace the process, stay flexible, and let things flow.
